From Jenny:

This week we will be working movements 9, 10, and 18.

We will also talk about and work on stamina, reviewing some tenets of healthy singing. We  should be able to sing fully while we are at home, but also make sure that we are not overdoing it.

In your translation for movement 18, note that Mandeliet is a secular vocal song, similar to a canzonet.

Hello everyone!

This week we will work through movements 10-15.  Many of these movements include only 1 or 2 voice parts, so please be prepared to work independently occasionally.

I will also continue to share what I have learned in my research about Orff and his life during WWII.  Please feel free to reach out to me or BJ if you have any questions.

Next week, we circle back to movement 9, so keep that fresh.

As always, have your translations written in!

Thank you!

Jenny
From Jenny (for 3/17 Rehearsal):
  1. Get ready for Movement 9 this week.  If you’ve sung any of the Brahms waltzes, get ready to channel what you practiced with those into these little movements.

  2. Reviewing diction in Movement 2 – After Rehearsal 11:
    • Double consonants will be sung as written below.  What I am clarifying here is where the consonant falls on the first syllable, the second syllable, or both.
    • Verse 1 – ca – pi  – la–ta–
    • Verse 2 – sum – mo–
    • Verse 2 – co – ru – i —

Thank you!

If you would like to be part of our social media PR campaign, please send a 1-2 sentence blurb to Jenny at (jcooper@lacademy.edu) that will accompany the image of you and your word.  These sentences can be both reflections on the season or hopes for the concert.  These will be posted on FB and Instagram from the Concord Chorale accounts.  Many of you have shared such sentiments with the board or with Jenny over the course of the term, and if you’d like those to be included, just let Jenny know.  No need to resend your words if you have already submitted.

NOTES FROM JENNY:

There were so many fun moments in rehearsal last week!  Highlights for me were seeing everyone singing Let There Be Peace On Earth – I loved to see you looking up with bright eyes and moving your body with the music. And it was fun working in sectionals and being able to interact with each of you.

This week is our second week to work on Non Nobis Domine.  We will only have one more rehearsal after this week on this piece before it will be recorded.  This week we will have sectionals and duetting sectionals (S A and T B), live with Molly and me.  As shown in the calendar on the info sheet, the recording for Non Nobis Domine will be due by October 4th.  After that we will begin rehearsing Bogoroditse.

The long rehearsal is this Sunday at 1:30. It will be our final rehearsal for the Preamble!  After the rehearsal is over at 3:00 everyone will be asked to record their video.  From 3:00-5:00 we will all be recording, helping each other record, re-recording, and figuring out our systems.  The goal is to have all recordings submitted by 5:00 on Sunday.

WE WILL DISCUSS DETAILS AND EXPECTATIONS THIS WEDNESDAY.

I hope you have had this music stuck in your head as much as I have this past week!

Best,
Jenny

NOTE FROM JENNY COOPER, MUSICAL DIRECTOR

Even though I desperately wish we could be singing together in person this fall, I am genuinely excited about our plans for virtual singing and the music we will make.  Our concert title is “When the Night is Furthest Worn,” which is pulled from the text of a new work that we will sing by African American composer Marques L.A. Garrett, titled “My Heart Be Brave.”  The program follows us metaphorically from seemingly endless, ruthless night to a just and bright dawn.  The music I chose is music that makes me want to sing, to sing from my toes all the way up to the sky.  I know we will continue to feel dissatisfied, frustrated, and isolated in so many parts of our lives, including this virtual music making experiment, so I wanted this to be music we really WANT to sing, that brings joy, fullness, rushes of warmth, and feelings of levitation.

If levitation feels beyond you right now, listen to this piece that we will be singing.  It’s sure to be a happy thought and give you wings.   https://youtu.be/InMhSNBlIg8

I hope you’ll join us!

Hi, all, Please continue to check the Facebook group for suggested fun singing exercises. If you are not on FB, here is a new 8 part round I love. It works as a great warm up too – try it on solfege first and throughout your range!
